The Road To Wrestlemania So Far…

So we are on the road to Wrestlemania, less than 40 days away from the ‘Grand-daddy of them all’ and things are starting to take shape for what promises to be the most exciting Wrestlemania in recent years. Following on from last year’s flop I can see the WWE go all out to make up for it. How many of you last year watched Wrestlemania and was left disappointed? I certainly was and so were many others. So how can WWE make sure that this year’s big event doesn’t go tits up like last year? I am going to give my thoughts on what could happen at The Sun Life Centre on April 1st.
Obviously we have the big grudge match between ‘Mr Fruity Pebbles’ John Cena and ‘Mr I will never leave WWE’ The Rock. Being a massive Rocky fan during the Attitude era I was up until recently wanting him to end up victorious over Cena, but despite his teenage love triangle/horror movie storyline with Kane, Zack Ryder and Eve being a bit of a car wreck John Cena came out on Raw Monday night and gave two great promos which reminded me how good he can be. Yes we are all bored of ‘Super Cena’ but really how much use is it having a movie star go over the top man on the company’s biggest night of the year? I just can’t see it being feasible because what would happen after ‘Mania if The Rock won? Next night on Raw just mention it and before you know it Rocky is off promoting whatever movie he has coming out next? That just seems bad business to me. I see it being a Cena victory in a very similar match to Hogan v Rock at Wrestlemania 18, this will allow the attitude era to finally be let go and Cena will continue to carry the torch in to the future. Let them have a moment on Raw the following night and then move on. I don’t doubt it is going to be a fantastic match though.
Another match that is catching everyone else’s attention is The Undertaker v HHH III. This time there is the added stipulation of it being within Hell In A Cell. The Undertaker had been trying to goad Hunter in to a 3rd and final match with HHH claiming he is a company man now and that he believes it would be bad business for him to end the streak. I kinda liked this stance from HHH as you can understand that if he is a real businessman he would be out to make as much money as possible and without doubt the streak of The Undertaker is a money maker and you just cannot see the WWE missing out on streak memorabilia such as dvd’s, t-shirts etc… The interaction of Shawn Michaels the other week added an extra spice to the match as The Undertaker used this against HHH claiming that Michaels was the better man, this was the straw that broke the camel’s back as such and HHH stormed back in to the ring and accepted the challenge of the Deadman as long as the match stipulation was that of Hell In A Cell. All I want to see from this match is a brawl, I don’t want to see massive bumps though, because last year’s event really took it out of ‘taker and it was actually quite sad seeing the big man being helped from the ring despite winning.
Punk versus Jericho is a match that us Internet geeks are all excited about. WWE needed Chris Jericho back when their attempts to turn The Miz in to the new Jericho failed. Chris Jericho is a legend within the squared circle. Everyone was under the impression Jericho would win the Royal Rumble and they would build the Punk v Jericho feud from there, it didn’t quite go that way but they got there in the end on Raw on Monday with Jericho winning a battle royale that has had its repercussions with one of the top heels in the company, Wade Barrett dislocating his elbow thus meaning he will miss out on Wrestlemania (insert sad face here). CM Punk was a revelation last summer with his ‘will he or won’t he leave’ storyline delivering jaw dropping promos and delivering top draw matches with John Cena. But since then he has gone a bit stale in my eyes. I look forward to the next few weeks though as both these guys are right to claim they are the best in the world and I fully expect both of them to back up their claims. Jericho’s band Fozzy are scheduled to be releasing a new album during the summer of this year and I would imagine he would like to be focussing his attentions to that after Wrestlemania. So I think Punk will go over Jericho here sadly. I would like to see another Jericho title run but it totally depends on what Jericho’s commitments are with Fozzy. They will surely want to tour the new album and I am unsure Jericho will want to balance the two.
So the only other officially announced match up so far is Daniel Bryan v Sheamus for the WHC. There will only be one outcome of this match up with a Sheamus title victory. WWE have slowly built Sheamus in to face and the fans have brought this. I had Sheamus down as my number two pick for the Rumble after Jericho and it was glaringly obvious which title Sheamus would challenge for. Daniel Bryan has been an excellent egomaniacal heel since winning the title, his feud with Big Show has been pleasantly surprising and it has given Bryan a bit of much needed character. I hope following Wrestlemania Daniel Bryan stays in the spotlight as a top heel as he does such a good job in that role. Sheamus will go on a dominating run as Heavyweight Champion and I can see a decent feud with Cody Rhodes in the future which will showcase the steps both have taken to become main eventers of the future.
At the moment that is all that has been announced for Wrestlemania, there is a lot of talent in the locker room who currently do not have a match up. Rumour has it we will see Money In The Bank return to Wrestlemania, with Randy Orton, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, R-Truth and others without a match currently I can see them competing. Having watched the live Smackdown from last night I wouldn’t be surprised if Cody Rhodes takes on The Big Show for the IC title with Rhodes going over Big Show proving his credibility. There has been talk of Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal being involved at Wrestlemania, I can see him being some sort of special enforcer for the Rhodes/Show match or something like that, don’t hold me on it though. Then there is the current feud between GM’s building between John Laurinaitis and Teddy Long, with 3 leading heels from Smackdown siding with Laurinaitis at Elimination Chamber I can see 3 faces standing up for Long. I am not going to speculate who this could be yet as I don’t have a clue who they will go for. I for one couldn’t care less about Teddy Long, he has been a GM for far too long and is just plain boring. I want to see someone new come in to The Smackdown GM role. Finally I fully expect a Divas matchup between Beth Phoenix and Kharma to take place following Kharma’s surprise appearance at The Rumble.
So there we have it so far, Mania and what could happen. This is all just speculating of course and I could be totally wrong. I hope once it’s all over and done with we can look back at Wrestlemania 28 as a successful PPV following last year’s disappointment.
